Mind The Gap To Save Money

The temperature has definitely dropped a degree or two in the last couple of weeks (I’ve defrosted the windscreen twice so far in October). With energy costs predicted to rise- again- in January 2025, and the price cap rise of 10% this month, it’s a good move the use your window coverings in a smart way to minimise the costs implications.

Think of your blinds, curtains and shutters as a thermostat for your window.

Blinds and shutters can have a significant, positive impact on energy savings.

New, independent research by the University of Salford’s Energy House laboratory has proved that blinds and shutters can help save energy and keep homes warm in winter.

Commissioned and funded by the British Blind and Shutter Association, the data shows that blinds and shutters can have a significant, positive impact on energy savings, reducing heat loss through windows by up to 33 per cent.

Several types of shading products were tested in the laboratory that is home to a full-scale early 20th century terraced house in an environmental chamber which replicates rain, wind and temperatures from -12℃ to 30℃ in controlled conditions.

BBSA Energy Saving Leaflet

The leaflet is available from us, if you wish to learn more; but, simply put:

  • Let the heat in during the day: when the day is sunny, open your blinds/ shutters/ curtains to use the free solar energy from the sun to warm up your home.

  • Close the window coverings at night: when the temperature starts to drop, close your blinds/ shutters/ curtains to provide extra insulation, helping to reduce heat loss and save energy.

That’s it - the simplest tips you will ever get to save money.

The other point to note is the difference in potential % savings between products.

Take roller blinds: standard roller blinds are the lowest due to the gaps around the edges, combined with a single layer, non- room darkening fabric. Change that fabric to a room darkening fabric, and block the gaps around the edges ( industry terms is zipped- adding side channels and a cassette), and the humble roller blind suddenly offers the best potential saving.

As long time members of the BBSA we aim to offer you the best possible advice on how best to warm up your home. Now is the best time to talk to us - before the winter temperatures really start to bite.
